Description

The National Museum of Anthropology was the first museum devoted to this science in Spain. It was the personal project of a doctor from the city of Segovia, Pedro González Velasco, and was inaugurated in 1875 by king Alphonse XII as the Anatomical and Anthropological Museum.

Dr González Velasco’s original collection was enriched with artefacts brought by several expeditions led by Spanish scientific institutions in the closing stages of the 19th century, plus pieces then held by the National Museum of Natural Sciences, including the ethnographic collection showed at the Philippines Exhibition held at the Retiro Park in 1887, the last big colonial exhibition of the Spanish Empire. The museum collection continued to grow thanks to donations and acquisitions made by the Directorate General of Fine Arts, Cultural Assets, Archives and Libraries since the 1960s.

Not losing its essence, the museum has evolved into an institution whose main purpose is to celebrate and spread the value of cultural diversity. The museum’s permanent exhibition provides visitors with a global perspective of different cultures around the world to appreciate their richness. The visitor will learn about cultural groups in every continent and the different manifestations of their culture. The contents are organised according to the same contextual pattern in every room.
